Matthew | Lariviere | University of Bristol | School for Policy Studies | Lecturer in Social Policy | Matthew's research explores theoretical and empirical contributions in two broad domains: (1) cross-cultural understandings and experiences of ageing, care and illness, and (2) the challenges and opportunities for technologies to support older adults, families, carers and clinicians in health and care systems. He ardently advocates for anthropology to engage in science communication with the public and other communities of practice, including industry partners, government, and care provider organisations. Methodologically, he is interested in how ethnographic sensibilities and praxis can inform technology development, medical research and health and care provision. |

Michael J | Walker | Universidad de Murcia | Departamento de Zoologia y Antropologia Fisica | Emeritus Professor | On behalf of MUPANTQUAT and our collaborating authors I wish to take this opportunity to inform you about the recent corroboration of the late Early (late Lower) Pleistocene age (990 – 772 ka) of the bifacially-flaked (“Acheulian”) hand-axe, incontrovertible evidence of combustion in a deep stratigraphically-closed level (provided by calcined bone fragments and heat-shattered chert with refittable fragments in situ: Antiquity 90, 571-589, 2016), and abundant associated Palaeolithic and palaeontological finds, from Cueva Negra del Estrecho del Río Quípar (Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia, SE Spain). This new CSUS-ESR (uranium-series electron-spin resonance) dating at Cueva Negra accords both with the time indicated by its micromammalian fossils (Historical Biology 32: 18-33, 2020) and with the magnetostratigraphical assignation of the sedimentary sequence towards the end of the reverse-polarity Matuyama chron (Nature 461: 82-85, 2009) though before the palaeomagnetic reversal at 772 ka that brought about the present Brunhes chron of normal polarity. The hand-axe is the oldest that has been excavated in Europe to date, likewise the clear evidence of combustion. The Cueva Negra finds are contemporaneous with the Homo antecessor skeletal remains from level TD6 in the Atapuerca Trinchera Gran Dolina (alas, Cueva Negra has no human fossils; front teeth formerly compared to Neanderthal incisors are now considered to be most likely those of a bear such as the extinct Ursus deningeri). The antiquity of the Cueva Negra Palaeolithic assemblage can be compared with that of dated sites like Notarchirico (Italy) or La Noira and Bois-de-Riquet (France), where there are bifacially-flaked artefacts (hand-axes and/or cleavers) from shortly after the the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary of 772 ka, as well as with the cleaver from the Barranc de la Boella sediments in NE Spain dated by one of our authors, Dr. Mathieu Duval, using the same technique, to a time similar to that of Cueva Negra before the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary. Thus bifacial flaking of large cutting tools appears in Mediterranean Spain before the end of the Matuyama chron, i.e., before the end of the Early (or Lower) Pleistocene. The Cueva Negra Palaeolithic assemblage (Human Evolution 31: 1-67, 2016; Quaternary International 295: 135-159, 2012) testifies to the manual dexterity, technical aptitude and cognitive versatility of Homo antecessor or H. erectus in southwestern Europe towards the end of the Early Pleistocene. Cueva Negra del Estrecho del Río Quípar is a singularly relevant site within the context of European later Early Pleistocene Palaeolithic archaeology. The Murcian Association for the Study of Palaeoanthropology and the Quaternary (MUPANTQUAT) coordinates research at Cueva Negra. It is a not-for-profit organisation (officially registered in Spain’s Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia), albeit with very little funding from public or philanthropic sources; what little money its members and world-wide helpers provide is spent on field and laboratory research, with much of the latter generously funded by the institutions of scientific collaborators. It is frustrating that, sad to say, the covid-19 pandemic in 2020 has interrupted our three-decade-long history of anual excavations since 1990 that we expect to resume in 2021, covid-19 permitting. |
