Long Abstract:

In the recently published volume on Urban Cosmopolitics (Routledge, 2016), STS scholars, human geographers, anthropologists and others together explore how the notion of 'cosmopolitics' - stemming from Bruno Latour and Isabelle Stengers - may open up cities as privileged sites for studying the contested composition of common socio-technical world of cohabitation. In this book lauch event, the two co-editors, Anders Blok and Ignacio Fariás, discuss the main impetus for the volume, as set in the context of growing two-way traffic between STS and urban studies. Building on their contribution to the volume and illustrating key themes of urban cosmopolitics, Alberto Corsín Jiménez and Adolfo Estalella present their work on Madrid's popular assemblies movement. To initiate a broader conversation, Jennifer Gabrys will round off by providing critical-constructive comments on the volume and its ambitions, drawing in part on her own work on 'citizen sensing' in urban contexts.
