Long Abstract:

This is a roundtable with former U.S. ambassadors to and policymakers on Central Asia. How do they see the countries now? What were the driving factors of U.S. policy then and what should the officials and diplomats working on the region prioritize now? What are the challenges and opportunities? Ambassador Pamela Spratlen served as America's top diplomat in both Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Ambassador George Krol was the top diplomat in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Both recently returned from the region. Ambassador Laura Kennedy served in Turkmenistan 2002-2003. Having these foreign service officers for a conversation on U.S.-Central Asia would help the CESS 2019 participants to enrich their understanding and perceptions about how Washington deals with this complicated part of the world.
