ANTHROPOLOGY AT OXFORD, 1905-2005: A CENTENARY CONFERENCE

September 15th – 18th, 2005

St Hugh's campus has been returned to its rightful tenants, the leaves are turning red and gold, the apples in the ISCA garden are ripe and falling from the tree, the swallows have gone and in their place the new and returning students. Oxford is throbbing with the activity of Noughth week and the anticipation of the term to come. As Rohan chugs his way up the Oxford Canal and we at ISCA dispense lecture lists and library cards, it should not be thought that the Centenary Conference or its participants have been forgotten.

There has been interesting feedback and there are ends to tie. Ultimately it will be possible to send out a newsletter/afterthoughts for those who attended in addition to those whom we contacted prior to the event. Inevitably our database was not exhaustive and any indication from those who attended of people who may have been missed out would be very welcome. Meanwhile please bear with us as we engage with the incoming students and the continuation of Anthropology at Oxford. We will be in touch.

We would like to thank all who came to the conference and made it such a happy reunion and celebration.

If you wish to read more about the conference which celebrated Oxford’s School of Anthropology's centenary in 2005, follow the links below (or above):

The conference booklet can be downloaded as a pdf here.

Many delegates also attended the 9th RAI Film Festival which was in Oxford immediately after the conference.  Under the title Looking Back, Looking Forward the Festival explored the past, present and future of ethnographic film and visual anthropology through workshops, prize competitions and special film screenings.  The EASA visual anthropology network also held a workshop at this time - for more details click here.
